Start with the alley

Plenty of Saint Louis buildings were laid out before anyone planned for a dumpster. Walk the blocks around Soulard, the Central West End or Laclede's Landing and you find the trash at the back, in an alley that a truck has to enter at an angle with a parked delivery van in the way. That shapes the quote more than the size of the bin does.

Miss the angle and the driver skips the stop. You either pay for the miss or live with the smell. So on the call, describe the alley and say how early the building can get the container rolled out. A gate is worth mentioning too. Some downtown pickups happen before the lunch crowd arrives for exactly this reason.

Two states, one metro

The metro straddles the Mississippi. Belleville, Granite City, Edwardsville and East Saint Louis sit in Illinois, and the rest of the list sits in Missouri. A hauler that runs routes on one side does not automatically run the other, and the landfill each truck dumps at changes with the state line. If you have a Hazelwood warehouse and a Granite City shop under one owner, expect two routes, so ask if one company can cover both and bill you once.

The older core of Saint Louis has another habit worth knowing about: brick buildings with a shared rear yard, where three or four tenants use the same bins and nobody owns the problem. A bakery splitting a container with a law office will argue over who filled it. If that describes your block, ask the landlord who holds the account before you sign for a second bin that the building already pays for.

Cleveland and Pittsburgh get the worse winters. Saint Louis gets summers hot and wet enough that restaurant waste in an unshaded enclosure draws flies within a day. Ice is rarer here, but ask what the driver does when the alley is glazed.

Who is throwing what away

Restaurants in Kirkwood and University City, and the Delmar Loop is packed with them, fill a container with food waste fast and need the lid shut. Offices around Clayton produce paper and cardboard and little else, which suits a small bin and a recycling container emptied less often. Maryland Heights and Hazelwood, near the airport and the river bottoms, are warehouse and distribution country, where a compactor or an eight yard bin on a daily schedule is common.

Hospital and university campuses, including the medical complex near Forest Park and the schools around it, run their own contracts with a lot of regulated material handled separately. Small clinics and dental offices in the suburbs sit in the ordinary commercial stream, and they mostly want a two yard bin that is emptied on a regular day.

What a Saint Louis quote should spell out

  • The container size and how many pickups a week, in writing.
  • A charge for extra pickups when the bin fills early, stated up front so a busy week does not surprise you.
  • What counts as overfill. Lids that will not close are the usual trigger.
  • The contract length, and what happens at the end of it. Some agreements renew on their own unless you cancel inside a window.
  • Whether recycling is separate. Some cities expect businesses to sort recycling, so ask what yours expects.

Surcharges for fuel and the like can show up as small lines on invoices. Ask if they are already in the rate you were quoted.

Where service reaches

A hauler based in the city proper usually covers the core and the inner ring without trouble. Saint Charles and Florissant, to the north and west, are more of a route question: if a company already runs trucks up Interstate 70 on your day, the stop costs them little, and if not, it is a special trip. The same goes for Edwardsville, which sits out on the Illinois side along the interstate. Give the address on the call and we send it to providers that already run those streets.

One more local point. Old industrial land runs along the river in Granite City and East Saint Louis, and much of the ground near Hazelwood is now logistics. A building there may have a dock on one side and a dumpster pad on the other, and the truck needs the same gate the freight trucks use. Coordinate the pickup window with the shipping schedule so nobody blocks anyone.

Home games and festival weekends close streets downtown, so a business near the stadium or on Washington Avenue should ask if pickups move on those days.

The details that get you an accurate quote

Give the street address, plus the cross street if the alley is hard to find. Say what the business is and what goes in the bin: grease, cardboard, bagged trash, pallets. Say how often you think you need pickup and how full your current bin gets. Gates, locks, tight turns and low wires all matter. A one time cleanout is a roll-off, not a front-load bin, and it is quoted differently, so say so.

When the quotes come back, compare them line by line and not just by the monthly figure.
