The Mississippi is the first thing to ask about when you collect shredding quotes in Saint Louis. A truck based in Hazelwood or Maryland Heights covers Missouri offices all day without a second thought. Send that same truck to Belleville or Edwardsville and the provider has to think about bridge traffic and the afternoon crawl on the interstates. Is the Illinois run one they already make every week, or one they will invent just for you? Ask where the route actually goes before you ask anything else.

The metro also has an odd shape. The city of Saint Louis sits apart from St. Louis County, and the county is where most of the office space is: Clayton, University City, Kirkwood, Maryland Heights. Providers cover the county heavily because that is where the volume lives. Downtown and the Central West End are covered too, but access gets harder there, and the quote should say so.

Who is shredding in this metro

Health care is the biggest source of regulated paper. Barnes-Jewish and the Washington University medical campus anchor the Central West End, Saint Louis University has its own hospital south of Midtown, and Mercy and SSM Health sites are spread across the county. Around each of them are small practices: dental offices, specialty groups, therapists, imaging centers. All of them fall under HIPAA, and the paper that piles up is the kind the rule is about. Old intake forms, mostly, and insurance cards someone photocopied in 2016.

Clayton is the county seat, which is why law firms and wealth managers cluster there along with a pile of title and insurance offices. Those clients usually want a locked console that gets emptied on a schedule, not a truck in the parking garage. Financial advisors with branch offices in suburban strip centers are a different animal. One console, emptied monthly, is plenty for most of them.

Near the airport and up in Hazelwood there is a working industrial base, mostly aerospace suppliers and machine shops. Engineering drawings and supplier paperwork are the usual shredding material. Across the river, Scott Air Force Base keeps defense-related offices busy around Belleville, and those buyers tend to ask harder questions about chain of custody than anyone else on this page.

Brick buildings, curbs and trucks

A lot of Saint Louis is old brick. Lofts in Lafayette Square and Soulard were converted from warehouses, downtown ones from hotels, and many have a single freight elevator and no real dock. If your office is in one of them, a mobile truck parked at the curb may be a headache, because the metered spaces and street rules are the city's, not the provider's. Ask if the driver will wheel carts out to the truck or if your staff are expected to bring boxes down themselves.

In the county, it is easier. Maryland Heights and Hazelwood office parks have lots a truck can pull into, and Kirkwood has plenty of small offices with back lots. A mobile truck makes sense for a one-time purge when you want to watch the paper go in. For anything that repeats, bins on a schedule are less work and a flat monthly fee is easier to budget.

The Illinois side

Granite City and Edwardsville are in Illinois, and so is East Saint Louis. That matters for two reasons. First, the trip: not every Missouri provider runs there on a regular day, and the ones that do may add a stop fee for a single customer. Second, state law. Rules on disposing of personal records are set state by state, and Illinois is not Missouri. A good provider handles that without making you read statutes, but ask them to confirm the certificate of destruction lists your actual pickup address.

Edwardsville has grown with the university and the medical offices around it, and Granite City still has an industrial and steel-related customer base. Belleville is the county seat for the Illinois side and has a steady flow of law office and government paper. If you are over there, say so in the first line of your request.

Before you sign

Ask for NAID AAA Certification. It is the audit program the industry uses, and a provider that holds it will say so without being asked twice. Ask how the certificate of destruction arrives, and how fast. A good answer is a document with a date and a service address on it, sent the same week.

Read the renewal clause. Plenty of scheduled service contracts roll over on their own for another full term, and the notice window for canceling is short. Also ask what happens when you need an extra pickup, because the first time your office cleans out a file room, you will.

One-time purges are usually quoted by the box or the bin, with a minimum charge for sending the truck. If you are in Clayton and your neighbor on the next floor also has boxes, you may be able to split a trip. That is a reasonable thing to ask a provider about, and some will say yes.

A final practical point: the closer you are to the I-70 and I-170 corridor, the more bids you will probably get. Out near Saint Charles or on the Illinois side, you will get fewer, and the shortest quote is not always the worst one. It may just be the driver who is already in your area on Thursdays.
