Seattle Paper Shredding Services
Put in your zip code and describe the job. Providers around King County send quotes for a purge, a recurring bin route or a truck at your door, and you pick one.

Start with the building
Most of the trouble with shredding in Seattle happens before the truck arrives. Downtown and South Lake Union towers have loading docks with time windows and freight elevators that someone has to reserve. Property managers want a certificate of insurance on file before a vendor sets foot in the lobby. If your office is on the nineteenth floor, say so on the first call. A crew that shows up without knowing about the dock reservation loses an hour, and you may pay for it.
For a tower tenant, console service is the quieter fix. A locked bin beside the copier, emptied on a schedule, keeps paper out of the recycling the cleaning crew handles. Purges tend to get scheduled around lease ends and office moves, and those come with deadlines.
Seattle tenants often share a floor with several other companies, and the building may already contract with one vendor for the whole tower. Ask your property manager before you sign anything of your own. Sometimes the building has an approved list, and sometimes it only cares that the vendor carries insurance. Either way, you save a week by asking first.
Across the water and down the valley
The metro is split by water, and the bridges are where routing time goes. A provider based in the Kent Valley or Renton can reach the Eastside, but I-405 or SR 520 at the wrong hour eats routing time. That is why a quote for Bellevue, Kirkland or Redmond may differ from one for a Seattle address, even at the same volume. A company with trucks already stationed on the Eastside is often faster for a Redmond purge than a downtown firm making the trip.
North of the city, Shoreline, Bothell and Edmonds sit along the I-5 corridor and SR 522. South, Burien, Renton and Kent are part of the warehouse and light-industrial belt, where the paper is often shipping records, HR files and old engineering drawings rather than client folders. Sammamish is mostly residential, so a request from there is usually a home office or a small practice.
Ferries are worth a note for anyone with an island or Kitsap County office. A provider will rarely bring a truck across the water for a small job, so those offices usually do better with a drop-off or a community shred event, or with a provider that keeps a truck on that side.
Who is shredding here
Health care is the largest group. UW Medicine and the First Hill campuses sit in the middle of a crowd of independent specialty practices, and those offices hold protected health information that HIPAA says to destroy properly. Law firms and the financial offices near Pioneer Square and Third Avenue produce the next big share.
Tech is a special case. Companies in Bellevue, Redmond and South Lake Union do not generate much paper, but they hold a lot of hardware. Old laptops, drives and badge cards are a bigger risk than file folders. If you are clearing out an office after a layoff or a lease change, ask whether media destruction is included or priced separately, and whether serial numbers go on the paperwork.
Aerospace and manufacturing around Renton and Kent add engineering records that often carry contractual confidentiality terms. Say so when you request a quote, because it changes who is allowed to do the work.
Port of Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport tenants, along with the freight and customs offices around them in the south end, deal with shipping paperwork that piles up in boxes after audits. Those are good candidates for a one-time purge rather than a standing console, since the volume comes in bursts.
What to ask, in order
- Mobile or off-site? A truck on the street in front of a Kirkland office park is easy to watch. Bins hauled to a plant suit a tight recurring route. Both are fine, but know which one you are buying.
- Does the certificate show the shred date? The pickup date is not the same thing.
- Can the crew work around a locked door and a short window? Seattle buildings often restrict vendor hours.
- Is paper sealed in the bin until it is shredded? Loose totes in a hallway are how paper walks off.
NAID AAA Certification is the industry audit program. A provider without it is not automatically doing it wrong, but you should hear why.
Rules, briefly
HIPAA governs health records. FACTA governs consumer report information, and lenders answer to Gramm-Leach-Bliley besides. Washington may add disposal rules of its own, so check with your attorney if you are unsure. The shredder's job is to document what was destroyed.
Rain is a nuisance, not a dealbreaker
Boxes left on a loading dock overnight get soaked and then jam the machine. Keep them inside until the truck is there. For a big purge, ask the provider to schedule a dry day or bring covered carts.
Providers around King County will quote for Seattle, Bellevue and most of the suburbs above, though not at the same minimum. Get two or three. The farthest suburb on your route is usually the one that moves the number.
