Minneapolis Equipment Rental for the Twin Cities

Say where the job is, when it starts and what you are building or fixing. Yards across the Twin Cities quote the machine and delivery, and you compare them before booking.

Dig season is short

Frost is out of the ground by April, give or take, and the clock runs until it comes back in November. Everything that can be built outside gets crammed into those months, which is why rental yards in the Twin Cities get stretched in May and September. If your project has a hard date, call early. Ask what the yard will do if the machine you reserved is not back from the previous renter.

The spring thaw and the road

When the frost comes out, many roads go on seasonal weight limits so heavy trucks do not break the pavement. A truck hauling a loaded machine can be affected, and a delivery to an out-of-the-way site might be delayed or sent by a longer route. Minneapolis contractors plan their summers around this, and some start heavy hauling before the thaw. Ask the yard if your delivery falls into a limited-road period and how they handle it. It is better to learn that on the phone than when the driver turns around.

Downtown, Saint Paul and the skyways

Downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul are older, dense and full of buildings tied together by skyways. Work inside those buildings is mostly overhead and mostly electric. A facilities team replacing lights, repairing a ceiling or setting up a conference wants scissor lifts and boom lifts, and now and then a towable. Loading docks have schedules and building managers expect certificates of insurance. Ask your yard to send the paperwork before the truck, not after.

Older buildings in both cities have narrow docks with very little room for a truck. A lift that comes in on a trailer needs a place to unload and a clear path. Tell the yard what the dock looks like, and send a photo if you can. Event work is a sizable part of rental here with stadiums and convention space downtown. Stage crews want lifts at specific hours and gone by morning, so tell the yard the load-in time.

Suburban growth: Maple Grove, Plymouth and Eden Prairie

Out west, Plymouth, Maple Grove and Eden Prairie hold corporate campuses, medical device companies, big retail and a lot of new building. Contractors there rent skid steers, mini excavators, telehandlers and compaction equipment in bulk, and for longer periods. The north and northeast, Brooklyn Park, Blaine and Coon Rapids, mix warehouses with newer retail and commercial pads. Eagan, Burnsville and Bloomington to the south have the airport hotels and the big-box stores, plus the large retail center that keeps lift crews on call.

The lakes and the river shape the map. Minneapolis has water everywhere, which means bridges and long way-around routes. A delivery crew that knows the roads will save you an hour, and one that follows a phone can cost you one.

A rooftop unit in Eden Prairie or a retail sign in Burnsville is a half-day lift job. Ask for a boom with enough reach to clear the parapet, and for the yard to confirm that the truck can get close enough. A lift that needs a driveway the truck cannot enter is a lift the crew cannot use.

Distance matters here. A yard in Saint Paul may charge more to deliver to Maple Grove than one in Brooklyn Park, so ask where the machine ships from and how the delivery charge is built.

Winter jobs and diesel

Minnesota winters cut the work back but never stop it. Short days in winter make lighting a major rental. Parking lots, loading docks and construction sites in Brooklyn Park, Blaine and Coon Rapids all use light towers for the early evening, and warehouses use generators for backup. Ask the yard for run time per tank so your night crew is not out of fuel at nine.

Snow-removal and parking lot crews rent skid steers, loaders and light towers through the dark months. Ask for a machine that has been winterized and fueled for the cold, and for a block heater on anything that sits overnight. A generator that will not start at five in the morning is a day lost.

Cold also affects aerial work. Hydraulic systems slow and batteries on electric lifts lose capacity. A lift that works eight hours in July may work noticeably less in January, so charge it overnight and ask the yard about the cold-weather battery rating.

Questions worth asking

Ask these before the truck rolls.

  • Is delivery and pickup included, or billed on top?
  • What does the damage waiver cover, and what does it leave out?
  • Who handles fuel, and how is the machine returned?
  • What happens if the machine breaks down? Is there a replacement and how soon?

You rent the iron, not the hands. If a lift or forklift is involved, check what training the site expects from whoever runs it.

Many Minneapolis renters keep one yard on the phone for the whole season and another as a backup, which is not a bad habit. When a delivery is late in May, a second quote saves a day. Call with the address and the work, and ask what the yard can have on the road by morning. If the answer is a week, call the next yard.
