Equipment Rental in Philadelphia, PA

Call with the address, the dates and the job. Yards around Philadelphia quote the machine, the delivery and the weekly rate, and flag street and rowhouse access problems before the truck leaves.

Tell us the machine, the reach you need and the dates

Rowhouses shape the rental business here more than any machine spec does. Streets are narrow, alleys are narrower, and a lot of the work happens in buildings that were framed long before anyone imagined a mini excavator going through the back. If you are renting for a job in Center City, South Philadelphia or Fishtown, measure first and call second.

Fitting machines into old blocks

Compact equipment is the story. Mini excavators, walk-behind loaders, stand-on skid steers and narrow scissor lifts are the machines that actually get through side gates and into basements. A standard skid steer will not make it down a rowhouse alley, and a regular boom lift will not clear overhead wires on many residential blocks. Tell the yard the narrowest point on the path, not the width of the site.

Curb space is the next question. Street delivery in Philadelphia usually means blocking a lane, and that can require a permit and a flagger. The city has its own rules about street occupation. Ask your yard what they usually need, and plan on the delivery driver not being able to wait around. If you are working on a block with parking permit restrictions, expect neighbors to have opinions.

The industrial side

South Philadelphia has the Navy Yard, which has grown into an office and industrial campus, and the port facilities along the Delaware River. Forklifts and light towers rent steadily there. Across the river, Camden has waterfront warehouses and rail-adjacent lots that call for the same machines. Chester and Norristown have older industrial buildings and municipal work, and many yards treat them as standard delivery zones from the Philadelphia side.

Hospitals and universities keep facilities teams busy. They at medical campuses and colleges rent lifts for lighting and ceiling work and generators for planned outages. The rules at those sites are tighter than at a construction job: infection control barriers and restricted hours. Tell the yard where the lift is going so they send an electric machine and have the right paperwork.

Age of the infrastructure

Older buildings mean older utilities. Digging near a rowhouse often turns up old lines, and mini excavator crews should have utility locates done well before the machine arrives. A rental you cannot use because the locate is late is a rental you pay for. In the region, the state's one-call system handles locates, and contractors know the drill.

Freeze and thaw in winter breaks up pavement and creates repair work. Compaction equipment, plate compactors and trench rollers, rent for patching and for utility restoration. If you are doing paving prep, ask about a compactor on the same call.

The big medical campuses near University City and Center City run construction almost continuously. Generators for planned power work and lifts for ceiling jobs rent steadily. Facilities managers there know the drill, and the yards that serve them keep electric and low-noise units in stock.

The building stock also means a lot of roofing, masonry and facade work. Brick repointing on rowhouses and older commercial buildings uses lifts and sometimes swing stages. On narrow streets a towable lift is often the answer, since it can be pulled behind a pickup and set up in a lane. Ask the yard if a towable fits your job. It saves a delivery.

Norristown has courthouse and government work along with older industrial buildings near the river. Chester, on the Delaware, has industrial sites that call for heavier equipment. Both are inside the usual delivery area for a Philadelphia yard, though the pickup time can vary with traffic on I-95 and the Schuylkill. Ask for a delivery window instead of a promise of a specific hour.

Neighbors and block captains pay attention to construction. A machine parked overnight on a street that was not cleared can bring a call to the city. Get the permit, and put it where it can be seen.

Billing details

  • Delivery and pickup, which can be larger than the day rate on a short job
  • Damage waiver, optional if your insurance covers rented gear
  • Fuel, billed on return
  • Extra charges for machines that return dirty or damaged

A yard that quotes only the day rate and says the rest is figured later is not a yard you want to rent from. Ask for the total on the phone.

Rowhouse jobs in January run into icy sidewalks and cars that will not move for a delivery truck, and a machine that cannot be set down by nine in the morning often does not get set down. If the work can wait until the thaw, it usually goes smoother. If it cannot, plan on a longer window and a salted path.

The narrowest point, and what else to say

Start with the address and the access path, and give its smallest width. Then the length of the rental and the work itself. For a lift, add the working height and say if it is going indoors. Training for lifts and forklifts is normally expected, and union sites may have their own say about who touches the machine.

If your job is on a block where you can only get one delivery slot, take the morning.
