Equipment Rental in Pittsburgh

Call with the Pittsburgh jobsite address and dates. Providers quote the machine, delivery and pickup, and tell you honestly whether the truck can reach a hillside site.

Can the truck get there

In Pittsburgh the first question about any rental is not the machine. It is the road. The city is built on hills cut by three rivers, with steep grades, bridges that carry weight limits, tunnels with height limits and neighborhoods where two vehicles cannot pass. A delivery truck carrying a boom lift or an excavator is long, heavy and tall. A provider that has not delivered to your neighborhood can find out the last block is the problem.

When a truck routes around a posted bridge, the delivery clock runs longer and so does the bill. Give the exact street. Mention if the final approach is steep, narrow or under a low bridge. Ask the driver to confirm the site is reachable before the machine is loaded. That saves a wasted trip, and a wasted trip is billed.

Slopes and slides

Plenty of Pittsburgh sites sit on hillsides, and hillsides move. Clay soils on steep ground slump after heavy rain, and retaining walls are a constant job. Mini excavators and compact track loaders are common because tracks grip a slope. Ask about the machine's grade limit. A scissor lift on a slope is a hazard, and a rough-terrain model with leveling outriggers is safer.

The older neighborhoods, Lawrenceville, the South Side slopes and the rowhouse streets of the North Side, mean tight alleys and steep driveways. A mini excavator on a small trailer or a narrow towable lift will get where a full-size machine will not. Be honest about the access when you call, because a quote for the wrong size costs more to fix than to avoid.

Landslides and slumps are a known problem in Allegheny County, and owners are careful. If your job is a retaining wall or a slope repair, the owner or engineer will probably name the machine. A provider can match what is written on the plan, but tell it early if the plan specifies a size.

Rock is close to the surface in much of the county. A footing can run into sandstone or shale. Say what you expect, since a hydraulic breaker attachment may be needed.

Downtown, Oakland and the Strip

Downtown sits where the rivers meet, and the blocks are dense. Lifts and small telehandlers work on facades and interiors, and street-side work needs city permission, so check with the city. Oakland is the university and hospital district, where facilities teams in labs and clinics rent electric lifts and expect clean machines. Hospitals and universities there are among the biggest employers in the region, and the rules on delivery times are strict. The Strip District has old produce and warehouse buildings turning into offices and labs, with loading docks and narrow streets. Forklifts and telehandlers are common.

The robotics and medical research boom means a stream of lab fit-outs in older brick buildings. Floors are not always level and elevators are not always big. A narrow electric scissor lift is the machine that fits.

Along the rivers, former steel mill land is being rebuilt as offices, research space and housing. These are large flat sites, closer to greenfield work: excavators, compaction equipment, light towers, generators.

Pittsburgh crews also get caught by weight. Wet clay, a loaded trailer and a steep drive is a bad combination, and a yard that has seen it will suggest a lighter machine or a second truck before you ask.

Monroeville, east of the city on the Parkway, has retail and office space. Plum, farther out, is mostly new housing and commercial pads. Bethel Park to the south is residential and commercial on hilly lots. A city provider can reach all three, though the Parkway East at rush hour is slow and a tunnel delay is a delay no provider controls. Ask for a delivery window and an alternate plan.

Winter and the freeze

Winters bring snow, ice and heavy freeze-thaw, and the hills turn that into a hazard for trucks. A delivery that goes fine in October may not in February. Ask about traction plans. Machines in the cold need winter fuel, block heaters and charged batteries.

Allegheny County has a lot of small municipalities, each with its own rules on work hours, noise and street use. Bethel Park and Plum are different governments with different offices. Do not assume the rules in one carry over to the other.

The quote

Ask what delivery costs to your exact street address, and whether the quote assumes a standard trailer or a smaller one. A mini excavator on a lighter truck can reach places a big flatbed cannot. The damage waiver is optional, and fuel and cleaning are the usual surprise lines. Lifts and forklifts need someone trained on the controls, which is your crew's job.

Pickup is the other half of the trip. A machine that was easy to deliver on a dry day can be hard to retrieve after a week of rain. Ask who decides if the truck is too big to get back out.

Facts to line up first

  • The street address, and a plain description of the last approach
  • Dates and how long you expect to be on site
  • The job, with how high or deep you have to go
  • Slope, soil, rock or slab
  • Indoor or outdoor
  • Anything on the route with a weight or height limit

The right provider will ask half of these before you volunteer them. Pittsburgh crews have learned to expect it.
