Brick, rivers and two states

Saint Louis is a brick city, and brick is why so many rental calls here start with a lift. Tuckpointing, window replacement, cornice repair and warehouse conversions in Soulard, Lafayette Square and the Central West End all put someone at height on a building that was never designed to have a machine parked beside it. Scissor lifts handle the interiors. Boom lifts and towable lifts reach the faces that sit behind a sidewalk and a row of parked cars.

Every Saint Louis facade has a neighbor, usually a party wall or a sidewalk shed. Measure the gap before you pick the machine.

The metro also straddles the Mississippi. Belleville, Granite City, Edwardsville and East Saint Louis are in Illinois, and the bridge is part of the delivery. A yard on the Missouri side can usually reach Metro East, but ask if the truck has to cross at rush hour and how that moves the delivery window. If your crew is in Illinois and the machine is in Missouri, say so on the first call.

Who is renting here

Hospitals and the research campus around the Central West End keep renovation going year round: ceiling work, mechanical rooms, dock repairs. Facilities teams there rent lifts by the week and lean toward electric machines, since exhaust indoors is a nonstarter. University City and Kirkwood have older commercial strips where small contractors rent mini excavators and skid steers for utility tie-ins and parking lot work.

Out in Hazelwood and Maryland Heights the work is warehouse and distribution: tilt-up buildings, dock leveler swaps, racking installs. Forklifts and telehandlers dominate. Saint Charles is the growth side, with new retail pads and subdivisions on the Missouri River bottoms, and that is excavator and compaction country.

Granite City still has heavy industry. Plants there rent generators, light towers and air compressors for shutdown weeks, when the whole site runs around the clock.

Mud, clay and flood season

The soil here is clay, and clay after a week of rain will swallow a wheeled skid steer. On bare ground, ask for a compact track loader. Tracks spread the weight, and the machine leaves the same afternoon it went in. For lifts on soft ground, ask about outrigger pads, or a rough-terrain model if there is no slab to stand on.

Book earlier than feels necessary for Saint Louis work between March and June. Facade season, utility season and the end of the winter freeze all land at once, and the lift fleet in the metro has a ceiling.

Low ground near the rivers floods. Crews in the bottoms near Saint Charles or on the Illinois side schedule around river stages, and they tell the yard when a machine might have to come off site on short notice. A yard that hears that up front plans the pickup. One that hears it after the rain is not happy, and neither are you.

Winters are short but real. Freeze and thaw crack pavement and then wreck the patch, so repair and trenching jobs run in the gaps. Diesel machines want winter fuel and a block heater on cold mornings, so ask whether the one you are getting is set up for it.

Reading the quote

Get day, week and four-week pricing broken out. The weekly figure often beats five days at the daily one, and the four-week figure beats a month of weekly bills. The first number on the page is rarely the one you will pay.

Then hunt for the lines that show up later. Delivery and pickup are usually separate charges, and a lift on a flatbed from a yard across the river costs more than one from five miles away. A damage waiver is a fee on top of the rate that covers some accidental damage, so find out what it excludes before you decline it. Fuel is either a refill charge or a return-it-full rule. Cleaning shows up when a machine comes back caked in mud.

The rental covers the iron, not the person running it. For lifts and forklifts, plenty of sites want to see proof of training from whoever is on the controls, so ask the yard what paperwork it expects and whether a card from a past employer works.

Before you dial

  • The jobsite address, plus the cross street if the building has a back entrance
  • The dates you want the machine and the date you want it gone
  • The job in a sentence: tuckpointing a three-story wall, grading a pad, trenching conduit
  • How high you have to reach or how deep you have to dig
  • Paved, gravel or dirt, and whether the truck can get close
  • Inside work, which points toward electric, or outside work, where diesel is fine

With that in hand the person on the phone can usually name the machine before quoting it. Without it you get a quote for the wrong thing and pay to swap it.

Where the trucks go

Downtown, the Central West End, Midtown and South City are short runs from the main yards near the interstates. Kirkwood, University City and Maryland Heights sit inside the usual delivery radius. Saint Charles and Florissant are a longer haul up I-70 and I-270 and may carry a delivery premium. Edwardsville and Belleville usually do, because of the river. If a provider quotes no delivery charge to Illinois, check that it is not folded into the daily rate.

The fastest way to learn who actually has a boom lift open next week is to call.
