The river is a state line here, and that matters to a trailer. Cincinnati sits in Ohio, Covington and Florence are in Kentucky, and a provider with a yard on one side may not reach the other without a separate setup. Say the state when you call.

Two states, one metro

Permits and inspections change when you cross the bridge. Ohio cities, Kentucky cities and the counties on both sides run their own building departments. A trailer on a lot in Covington or Florence follows Kentucky rules, and one in Mason or Fairfield follows Ohio rules. Ask the provider which side they serve, and ask them to check with the local office about a temporary structure.

The bridges themselves are part of the job. The Brent Spence corridor is a work zone of its own, and its traffic slows trucks across the river. Plan delivery times around the rush.

Who is building

Downtown and Over-the-Rhine have apartments and office conversions in old brick buildings, and The Banks along the river is still filling in. The University of Cincinnati and the hospital district at Cincinnati Children's and the university medical campus keep a steady supply of projects. Corporate offices downtown and in the suburbs rework floors on a rolling basis.

North of the city, Mason has office parks, medical buildings and Kings Island, and Fairfield is warehouse and industrial. South across the river, the airport in northern Kentucky is a major air cargo hub, and the construction around it in Florence and Independence is nearly constant with warehouses and logistics yards. GE's aerospace operations at Evendale and the industrial ground along the Mill Creek valley add manufacturing.

The first minute on the phone

Dispatch needs the full address and the state before anything else. After that: a start date, a length, a headcount. Cincinnati is hilly and its clay slides when wet, so describe the slope and the soil. Power matters, and so do any asks for furniture, a restroom or a ramp. A site near the river should say so.

Callers fall into a few camps. General contractors on hospital and university work want large offices with room for meetings. Logistics contractors in northern Kentucky ask for a small office, often joined to storage. Subdivision developers in Mason and Fairfield want a trailer a buyer can walk into without wincing. The provider will ask which one you are.

Older neighborhoods are different again. In Over-the-Rhine and across the river in Covington, the work is renovation of narrow brick buildings on tight streets, with the trailer in a lot a block away from the job. If that is your case, say how far the lot is from the work, because a walk of two blocks changes how the office is used.

Hills, river and weather

Winters are cold enough to freeze pipes and summers are humid, so the heating and cooling both matter. Ask for a unit with a strong furnace and a real air conditioner. Rain is steady in spring, and the Ohio floods. Low ground near the river and along creeks is where to be careful. Clay on hillsides holds water, and a trailer on a pad cut into a slope needs drainage.

Habits differ across the river, and a provider who works both sides will know them. One who works only the Ohio side may not.

The Cincinnati-area projects that run longest are the ones tied to the river and the highways. Bridge and utility work takes years, and the trailers on those jobs move as the work moves along the corridor. If your project is linear, tell the provider, because a trailer that needs to relocate every few months is a different deal than one that sits in a lot.

Weather will shape the move too. Heavy rain in the spring can close low roads near the river and stall a delivery for a day. Build a margin into the date you tell the crew.

The Ohio sets the calendar for anything near it. Flood-wall work, barge traffic and riverfront projects keep contractors on low ground, and a trailer at the edge of Covington or Newport needs a plan for a rising river. Find out where the provider would move it and how many hours that takes.

West of downtown, in Colerain and Green Township, the jobs look like the northern suburbs but the hills are steeper and the roads narrower. Delivery routes there deserve a drive-through before the truck commits.

Yards, crews and the bridge

Where the yard is decides how long delivery takes. Steps, skirting and the move out at the end of the job should all be written into the quote.

A job that straddles the state line, like a bridge or a utility corridor, may need two trailers or one that can be moved. Say so.

Most trailers here rent by the month. If you have a school project, a hospital project or a long highway job, ask about buying.

Deliveries up the steep streets of Mount Adams, Clifton and the other hillside neighborhoods are slow and sometimes impossible for a long truck. If your site is in one of them, a smaller unit or a crane set may be the only way in. Ask early, and have a photo of the street ready when you call.
