Work that moves every week

Much of the work in Los Angeles County is temporary, and it moves. A production company shooting in Burbank on Monday may be in Pasadena by Friday, and the restroom trailer has to be there ahead of the first call time, not after. If you run locations for shoots, tell the provider the call time, and not only the day.

Events work the same way. Game days at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and concerts at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena are organized by the venues, but the businesses around them, tailgate vendors and pop-up markets, plan their own facilities. Streets near Inglewood and Pasadena can close with little warning, so ask your provider how pickup works if access changes.

Restroom trailers are what a unit manager usually books for a day on location. A trailer with several stalls, running water, air conditioning and lights is a different category from a standard unit. Trailers need a flat spot and room to maneuver. Streets in Hollywood and the hills are not always wide enough, so a location scout should check turning room before the booking.

Dry heat, dust and hills

Rain barely matters for most of the year. Heat and dust do. A unit sitting in the sun all day in the San Fernando Valley gets uncomfortable fast, and a site on a dirt pad kicks grit into everything. Ask for units placed in shade when the site allows, and for hand sanitizer stocked at every unit.

Hillside work is different. Hillside sites above Glendale and Burbank sit on narrow roads where a pump truck cannot park. A provider will tell you honestly if it can reach the spot with a hose or if the unit has to sit lower down at the access point. Flat ground and a clear route for the service truck matter more than a spot with a view of the work.

Wind matters too. When the Santa Ana winds blow, empty units can tip. Ask the provider how it handles a weather stand-down, and who pays if the work is called off.

Sprawl decides who services you

Few metros are as spread out. A provider in the South Bay does not want to drive to Alhambra on a weekly service run, and a provider in the San Gabriel Valley does not want Compton. Route density drives the quote. The closest provider to your address nearly always gives the best service schedule, even if a competitor farther away quotes lower on paper.

Downey, South Gate, Compton and Hawthorne sit around the logistics corridors near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, where warehouse and trucking-yard construction is steady.

Glendale and Burbank sit close together on the northern side and share a lot of studio-adjacent and light industrial work. Pasadena and Alhambra anchor the San Gabriel Valley, where one provider will often cover both. Inglewood is a short drive from the airport and the stadium district, so providers there are used to event traffic and short notice. Match your address to where the truck starts the day, and the rest of the quote gets easier.

Santa Monica and the Westside are mostly office and hotel builds, with little room for a unit and tight limits on street use. Check with the city before you plan a unit on public ground, and expect the provider to ask for a site photo.

Long-term jobsite rentals

For a monthly jobsite rental, make sure the quote states the service day and what each visit includes: pump, clean, restock, and sanitizer. The best providers service on a fixed day so your crew knows when the units will be clean. Ask what happens if a unit is vandalized or tipped over, and whether graffiti or damage is billed.

Start from ten workers to a unit and adjust from there. Add an ADA unit if the public or a permit inspector will be on site.

On a long job, take a photo of every unit on day one. Vandalism and tipping are real on unattended Los Angeles sites, and a provider will want to know whether the damage happened on your watch. A lock on the gate helps more than a lock on the door.

Weekly service is the floor for a crew of any size. Where a site has more than twenty workers, ask about a mid-week visit as well. The cost is small next to a crew that stops using the units.

Ask for a Los Angeles provider who already services your part of the county. Most of them will say yes to nearly anything on the phone, so the better test is a specific question: which day does the truck come to my street, and who drives it?

Information the provider will ask for

Address, with the nearest cross street. Start date and expected end date. Number of workers or expected guests. Whether the unit sits on pavement or dirt. How far from the road. Who will be there to let the driver in. Events also need the run of show: gates open, peak hours and teardown time.

Call two or three providers, describe the job the same way each time, and compare what is written down.
