The first weekend in May

Everything in Louisville bends around Derby. For the two weeks before the race, Churchill Downs and the neighborhoods around it, the waterfront, and private venues across the county run events almost every day. The fireworks over the river before the race pull a crowd that fills Waterfront Park. All of it needs restrooms, and the units get booked early.

Churchill Downs also runs a fall meet, so the demand does not stop after May. If you are planning something during Derby season, call well ahead. Stock gets tight, and accessible units and restroom trailers go first. Make sure the quote includes a service pass during the event, not just delivery and pickup. A midday visit on a hot day is worth the line item, and the same goes for a night pass if the party runs late.

The Kentucky State Fair, the bourbon festivals, the big outdoor concerts and the charity races fill the rest of the year. The distillery attractions along Main Street draw steady crowds, and some smaller venues rent units most weekends. If you run a venue, a standing arrangement with a provider is easier than a new order every time.

Ask whether the provider offers deluxe flushing units for a corporate event. At a Derby party with guests in good clothes, standard units are a hard sell, and a restroom trailer is the sensible choice.

In Butchertown, NuLu and Germantown, rehab work on old brick buildings means narrow lots and alleys. A unit often ends up in a side yard, so tell the provider how wide the gate is. On the east side, St. Matthews and the medical corridors off the Watterson see steady office and clinic work, and a provider with a yard that way can quote lower than one downtown.

Two states, one metro

Jeffersonville, Clarksville and New Albany sit across the Ohio River in Indiana, connected by the downtown bridges. A Louisville provider that crosses the river may charge differently. Ask if the provider has a yard on the Indiana side.

Jeffersontown, to the east, is a distribution and light industrial area with warehouse projects. The same is true around the airport, where the big shipping hub keeps adding space and keeps a large overnight workforce.

The downtown bridges all clog at rush hour, and a delivery across the river can run an hour past what the map says. Book morning windows. For a recurring route, ask whether the Indiana side gets its own service day.

Clarksville and Jeffersonville have riverfront redevelopment and new apartments. Bardstown Road has retail and light industry.

Construction and freight

The cargo hub at the airport and the plants on the south side give Louisville a steady run of industrial work. Those sites are large and flat, and a crew of a hundred will want a row of units with handwash stations at the gate, where trucks can reach them. Downtown, the hospital district and the University of Louisville campus have steady building and renovation.

Ten workers to a unit is the usual starting math. Run two shifts through the same units and they fill faster and need more visits, even if headcount at any one hour is lower.

The auto plants and the appliance campus on the south side, along with their suppliers, have shutdowns and retooling projects that bring large crews on short notice. The units for those jobs are often ordered in a hurry, and the provider that can deliver tomorrow is the provider you use again.

Heat, humidity and the January cold snap

Louisville summers are humid, and a unit in the sun gets hot. Ask for shade placement, and for a second service in July and August on a big site. Winters bring ice and the occasional deep freeze. If a rental runs through the cold months, ask about winterized units. An unprotected tank can freeze and crack, and you may be billed for it.

After a wet spring, a lot in the river bottoms or near the creeks can stay soft for days, and Ohio River high water is rare but real. Put units on a rise and tell the provider about low branches and the ground.

Louisville also gets tornado watches in spring and the odd derecho, so ask how units are anchored on open lots, the same as you would anywhere in the middle of the country.

What a Louisville dispatcher needs to hear

Give the site address and say which side of the river it is on. Say how many people you expect and how long you need the units. Mention gates, locked yards and any rule about site access.

For a Derby event, ask for the weekend you want and have the headcount ready. It is not a market where you can order the week of the party.

Louisville has a large trucking and shipping workforce, and the overnight crews that build and expand the hub buildings work odd hours. Ask for service that matches the shift, and for lighting in the units on night jobs.

If the units are going to a track or a stadium lot, ask the owner first. Some venues work only with approved vendors.
