The Triangle keeps building

Wake County keeps adding houses and warehouses, and the work radiates from Raleigh in every direction. Apex, Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Wake Forest, Clayton and Morrisville all have large residential and commercial sites underway. Those are raw lots, often in red clay, with no building to borrow a restroom from.

On a subdivision build, plans usually start at ten people per unit on a standard week, with units staged where the crews are working and moved as the lots fill in. Ask how the provider handles a move. Some charge for it and some do not.

NC State's campus and the state government buildings add steady renovation work that does not follow the housing cycle. Contractors on those jobs know the drill: accessible units and a handwash station, from a provider that has worked on institutional grounds. If you are bidding a job on a campus, ask the facilities office where units are allowed.

Glenwood South and the warehouse district have turned from low buildings into mid-rise apartment and office projects. The sites are tight, and the usual answer is to rent two or three units and keep them on a lot for the job, with a weekly service that fits the delivery windows.

The worst stretch on a new subdivision is the road before it is paved. A rutted clay street can keep the truck from reaching units set deep in the lots, so ask to place them at the street entrance until paving goes down.

Research parks, hospitals and downtown

Research Triangle Park and the corridor toward Durham have lab and office construction with long schedules and large crews. A general contractor on one of these sites will often want a monthly contract, accessible units, handwash stations, and a service route that fits security rules. Downtown Raleigh, Glenwood South, and the area near the state capitol have tight lots where the units go in a parking space or an alley, and the city may have rules about what can go in the street.

Cary and Durham are close enough that providers based in Raleigh usually cover them. Wake Forest and Clayton are farther, and a provider on the south side may price a delivery to Wake Forest differently.

Durham and Cary each have their own project mix. Durham has the tobacco warehouses converted to offices and labs, plus the university and hospital buildings. Cary has corporate campuses and new retail.

Morrisville, next to the airport, is a mix of lab and logistics buildings. If your crew works near the airport, tell the provider, because the access roads around the airport are not obvious and a truck can lose time finding the gate.

Fairgrounds, greenways and weekend events

The state fair in October is one of the biggest events in town, and the fairgrounds host more through the year. Add the road races and the concerts at the Cary amphitheater and the calendar fills up. Large, permitted events usually work with an in-house restroom plan, but smaller ones, such as a corporate picnic, a charity run, or a church festival, call a rental company directly.

For events, ask that the quote name the service visit during the event, not only delivery and pickup. Pollen season in spring puts a yellow film on everything, and people want the handwash station more than usual.

For a school or church festival, a few units and a handwash station are plenty. For a large road race or a concert, ask for more units than you think you need, and ask the provider to stage some near the start and the finish. Lines at the start of a race are what people remember.

Some venues and permit offices want a restroom plan before they approve a tent or a stage, and a provider can often help sketch one.

Weather and ground

Raleigh summers are hot and wet. Afternoon storms can leave a clay lot slick, so a truck that cannot reach the unit will skip the service. Set units on gravel, near the road, if the site allows. Winters are mild, but a hard freeze in January is not unusual, and a long rental through the winter should include antifreeze in the tank. Ask the provider, as it is not always the default.

If your site has trenches or open utility cuts nearby, tell them. A unit placed too close to an excavation is a safety problem.

A site that sits for months through pollen season and summer storms is worth a quick extra look from the provider, not only the weekly pump.

What the dispatcher will ask

Have the site address or the closest intersection, your start date, the headcount, and how long you expect to be there. For an event, bring the hours and the expected crowd.

On a long rental, check the unit count against the headcount every month or so. Crews shrink after the framing is done.

Raleigh contractors who run several sites at once should ask for one account with all sites on a single service day. It makes the paperwork easier, and one phone call fixes a missed visit at any of them.
