Red clay and a lot of rain

Atlanta sites are red clay, and clay does two things to a fence. After rain it turns slick and soft, so a delivery truck can get stuck at the gate. In a dry spell it hardens and makes driven posts difficult. Most rentals here are panels on stands with ballast to hold them, and that is a fine choice if the stands are heavy enough. Ask how many blocks per stand the crew uses on screened runs.

Erosion control matters here too. Many sites need silt fence along the low edge, which is a separate product from chain link panels. Tell the provider if you need both so they can quote the whole perimeter in one trip.

Traffic is the main scheduling problem. A truck from a south side yard to a Buckhead site in late afternoon is a very different trip from the same drive at six in the morning. Ask for early delivery windows, and do not be surprised if a provider asks for yours to be firm. Crews here plan the day around the interstates.

Tree cover is the other quirk. A lot of Atlanta sites are wooded, and clearing is the first phase. Fence goes up around the tree save areas, and some jurisdictions require protection around trees you intend to keep. Tell the provider if you need tree protection fence in addition to a perimeter, since it is a different job, usually done earlier.

Where the work is

Midtown and Buckhead keep adding towers and hotels, and the jobs are tight, with sidewalk traffic and little curb. Sandy Springs and Dunwoody are office-heavy, with renovation of older campuses near the perimeter highway. Peachtree Corners is a tech park area where older commercial buildings keep getting rebuilt. Marietta, Smyrna and Tucker have retail, apartment and light industrial projects.

South and east of the city, East Point, Stonecrest and Douglasville are logistics territory. Warehouses near the airport and the interstates need long perimeters, trailer gates and yard fence, and the delivery distances run longer. Brookhaven sits between the dense north side and the quieter neighborhoods, with a mix of infill and redevelopment.

Growth moves fast on the edges. Stonecrest, Douglasville and the outer Fulton and DeKalb areas are turning fields into subdivisions and distribution sites, and the fence for those jobs is long and temporary. Providers get used to renting miles of panel to a single builder, and they may quote better terms if you are clear about the schedule and the phases.

The older parts of the city add their own questions. A site in East Point or Marietta near an old rail line can have buried debris and uneven ground, and a crew will want to walk it before they set stands. Offer a site visit if the ground is uncertain. A short walk saves a bad day of installation.

Events and film

Stadium events, park festivals, concerts and conventions all need crowd barricades and queue lines. The city is also a major film location, and productions use fence for holding areas and base camps, often on short notice and in odd spots. Say up front if your event needs overnight setup, since crews plan around that.

Storms and heat

Summer thunderstorms hit hard and fast. Tornado watches and the remnants of coastal storms happen too. Screen on fence in those conditions is a risk, and a provider should have a plan for it. Heat is a quieter issue: stands and screen age quickly in July.

Closing a sidewalk or a lane usually needs the city or county to sign off. Atlanta, Sandy Springs and Marietta each have their own process, so ask the city where the work is and have the provider tell you what they need.

Questions that sort providers

  • How do you secure screen against summer storms?
  • Do you deliver to muddy sites?
  • Do you rent silt fence or only chain link?
  • What does a reset after a storm cost?
  • Can you come out the same week?

Distance changes the math in a metro this spread out. A fence crew can spend half of a short job driving, so many providers set a minimum order that makes the trip worth it. If you only need a short run, ask what the minimum is, and ask whether adding a second site nearby would bring the rate down. Contractors who work on several lots in Smyrna or Marietta often bundle them.

Also ask about pickup. Pickup is not always the same day as the end of your rental. A fence that sits a week past your last day can cost a week of rent, so give the provider a firm date and a person to call when the work wraps.

Neighborhood groups in Atlanta organize quickly. A site that looks messy or stays closed to the sidewalk longer than planned will hear about it from neighbors and the city. Clean fence, tidy screen and a posted contact cost little and help.

The short call

Give them the address, the dates, the footage, the gates, what the ground is and who meets the crew. If the site is on a slope, say so.

Leave a number you will actually answer, since providers work down their call list fast.
