Both sides of the river

Cincinnati is a metro that crosses a state line. Covington, Florence and Independence are in Kentucky, and the permit and traffic offices are not the ones Ohio uses. A provider who regularly crosses the river will know which office to call. Tell them which side your site is on at the start of the conversation, and ask whether delivery across the bridge adds to the cost.

Bridge traffic is real. The main river crossing carries heavy truck volume, and delays are common. If you need an early delivery, plan for it.

Contractors who work both sides often run into a mismatch in how each side treats sidewalk closures and working hours. Providers who regularly cross can help you read those differences, and some will help you prepare a simple site plan for the permit office. If you have a general contractor, ask them what they have already filed.

Hills, old brick and downtown sites

Cincinnati is built on hills, and many sites slope. Over-the-Rhine, with its old brick buildings, has been redeveloped one block at a time, and those jobs are tight: narrow streets and buildings that share walls, with foot traffic all day. Fence there takes up a lane or a sidewalk, so check with the city before you order. The riverfront, with its stadiums and the park, has seen new construction as well.

Downtown Cincinnati has corporate offices and a large hospital district in Corryville and Clifton, where university and medical construction rarely stops. Fence along those sites keeps construction away from patients and students.

Old brick buildings call for care. Adjacent walls may be shared, and a fence cannot be anchored into a building you do not own. On those sites, expect weighted stands on the sidewalk and a plan for what happens when the wind picks up between two tall buildings.

Stairs and steep streets are a delivery issue too. A truck cannot always back down a hill street, and a crew may have to carry panels by hand a block or two. Tell the provider, since hand-carried setup takes longer and the quote should reflect it.

Logistics and the airport

The big airport sits across the river in Kentucky and has become a major cargo hub, which means warehouses and distribution buildings in Florence and Independence and nearby. Those projects are wide and flat, with long perimeters and vehicle gates. Fairfield, to the north, has a similar mix of industrial and commercial sites. On a big pad the questions are how many feet and how many gates, then how fast the crew can finish.

Warehouse yards often fence a trailer lot or a construction laydown area for a year or longer. For a long rental, ask how the monthly rate is set and whether there is a point where buying the panels outright would make more sense than renting them.

Night work is common on airport-adjacent projects. If your crew starts before dawn, tell the provider, since the install schedule is easier to set when everyone knows the hours.

Mason has corporate campuses and a major amusement park, and the area is known for a big annual tennis tournament that brings crowds and temporary structures. Event fencing there is regular work. If you are organizing something in the north suburbs, call early in the summer.

Corporate campuses in the northern suburbs often have a security officer at the gate. The fence provider should know who to check in with, and the contractor should leave a name and number at the front. A driver who cannot find the right gate wastes a morning.

Weather and ground

Winters are cold enough for freeze and thaw, though not as harsh as the lake cities to the north. Clay soil holds water in the spring. Screen can catch wind and snow, so ask about bracing and winter removal. Hills mean runoff, and fence at the bottom of a slope may need extra footing.

Spring storms can bring strong gusts and heavy rain in a short time. A fence on a sloped lot may need its footing checked afterward. Ask the provider whether a check visit is included or billed separately.

Festivals and game days

Baseball and football crowds, the big fireworks night on the river, the German festivals downtown and neighborhood events all use barricades. Setup is usually overnight. Ask the provider how many panels they can move on a truck and how they handle road closures.

The riverfront on a game or festival day is one of the more crowded places in the metro. If your job is anywhere near it, plan deliveries before the crowds and removals after them, and ask the provider how they handle it when a road closes without notice.

Checklist before dialing

The address and which state it is in, the dates, the length, the gates, the surface and any slope. For an event, add the public hours and a guess at the crowd.

Call with that and you will hear back from Cincinnati providers who cover your side of the river.

If your project has a general contractor, ask who is responsible for the permit and who pays for any crossing delay. Settling that before the call keeps the provider from guessing.
